Since 1973, STERN has been involved with all kinds of relief actions for people in need. It all began with the fight against the famine in Ethiopia.

A long-term project for children suffering from cancer followed and in 1990, STERN collected millions for people in Russia who suffered because of the cold weather during the upheavals. Be it the distress in Bosnia, or the flood of the century at the river Elbe in 2002, STERN readers have always donated millions to help other people.

Requests for donations were previously made directly by various help organizations such as UNICEF, German Agro Action, or CARE and Medecins sans Frontières. However, in late 2003, STERN decided to develop its aid system further and founded an independent association: Stiftung STERN - Hilfe für Menschen e.V. (The STERN foundation – Help for People).

The objective of this association is to encourage and support people at home and abroad who fall on hard times through no fault of their own, and particularly to support civil defense and disaster prevention measures to enable the rescue of those whose lives are in danger. This includes supporting institutions who are active in these areas supported by the association, such as asylums, schools, hospitals, and other recognized non-profit organizations.

The association assumes responsibility for its own social and corporate welfare and collects donations for specific relief efforts. Thanks to cooperation with various aid organizations, it can offer fast, independent and functional help to people in need. The association's funds are monitored by the STERN foundation.
